The Bulletin

During 2012, #4 (2011) was delivered in January and # 5-6 were published and delivered in due time.

The WebSite

In 2012 our website in Portuguese had 11.814 visitors from 91 different countries and 8.403 page views, the majority from Portugal – 7.076 (69,9%) and Brazil – 1.327 (11,2%).

Our Web in English had a total of 17.715 visitors and 5.135 page views, from 116 different countries, predominantly from the U.S.A., Portugal, France and the United Kingdom.

Several enquires about decorations were addressed to the Academy, as well as requests for the acquistion of our Bulletin.

Membership

In 2012, our membership increased with 11 new members, 3 of which correspondants – from Argentine, Belgium, France,  Germany and the U.S.A. On the other hand, we lost 4 members, one of whom from abroad, due to lack of payment of annual fees.

Therefore, in almost three years of activity, 33 new members were admitted, of which 10 correspondants – 4 from France, 2 from the Netherlands, 1 from de USA, 1 from Germany, 1 from Belgium and 1 from Argentine. The total number of members in 2012 arose to 55.

Efforts must continue to be made in order to recruit new members, and we count on our present members contribution, passing the word to their friends interested in Phaleristics or by offering them numbers of our Bulletin, with précis in English and French.

Jan.-June 2012

We are pleased to announce that within a scarce two years of activity, our Academy has grown steadily with the admission of new members, both Portuguese and foreigners.

Indeed, at the end first semester of 2012, the Academy has reached 51 members, of which 12 are foreign members (Correspondants).

We are sorry to report the death of our founding member Dom Manuel de Sousa Holstein-Beck, IV Count of Póvoa (30.11.1932 – 27.11.2011). The latter was an exquisite Art collector with a particular interest in jewel-insignia of the ancient Portuguese Military Orders, and orders of chivalry of the XVII-XIX centuries.

A keen supporter of our Academy since its foundation, his loss will greatly felt by all who knew him.

Meanwhile, part of his phaleristic-related invaluable collection was unfortunately sold at an Auction which took place in Lisbon, last June, reported in a post  at this website.

Some of  the more valuable items sold were acquired by foreign collectors. It is a pity that the Ministry of Culture, out of ignorance or lack of means, did not exert its right of option in the acquisition of the more rare and precious pieces.

Bulletin «Pro Phalaris» # 6, due to be delivered till the end of the year, will dedicate an article on this subject.

V International Phaleristic Meeting – 2011, in Copenhagen

From Mr. Jan René Westh, Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of Denmark we received the news that the Danish Society plans to organize an international phaleristic meeeting, in Copenhagen, on May, 27-29, 2011.

The Danish Society was the first to launch these European Meetings followed by Belgium and Switzerland, and Portugal in 2010!

We are happy to learn that the idea of gathering phaleristic amateurs and enthusiasts on an international scale is gaining roots, hoping that delegations from more countries will be willing to attend, namely, Austria, Germany, ireland, United Kingdom, Russia and Serbia.
